Jen Deng's story

Jen Deng (JD) Lee started at ANU in 2008 and came all the way from Brunei in South East Asia to study a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Geology. JD chose to study at ANU as “it had the reputation as the top university in Australia, however the fact that ANU is primarily driven by research was my main reason for choosing ANU”.

During his time at ANU, some of JD’s most interesting experiences were the fieldtrips for his Geology units. This included trips to the South Coast, Mount Isa and Peru! JD also recalls the “unique experience of handling uranium samples and entering underground mines” on his field trips.

JD will miss the tight-knit community of the Earth and Marine Sciences Department at ANU where there were many opportunities to network with other students and staff members. His favorite memory of ANU is lunchtimes on the grass in Union Court with friends during late summer and early spring. JD says he will miss going to happy hour at tha ANU Bar and warns other students about an aggressive duck that lives opposite Johns College and Ursula Hall.

So what does the future hold for JD? JD is now working as a research assistant for FrOG Tech, a geological consultancy firm based in Canberra. After several years in the workforce, JD hopes to persue further study through a Masters or a PhD at the Australian School of Petroleum. But right now JD is happy rediscovering lost time after a stressful honours year, “I have been enjoying going back to the gym and I am also considering taking up an evening language or dance class”.

When asked what he would tell a student considering attending ANU, JD’s answer is simple – “Do it! My life has been enriched because of my experience at ANU. The people that I have met in my four years here are the most amazing collection of people you will meet and I wouldn’t have it any other way”.
