Jun's story

My childhood dream has always been to become a technology entrepreneur. This dream was made possible through my experience at ANU.

I was born in Shanghai to a working-class family. I am the kind of person who loves to be challenged and decided to leave China to pursue my tertiary education at the ANU. I first moved to Canberra in 2005 and commenced my studies at the ANU College. I was lucky enough to stay with a local host family in Canberra for a few months and still maintain a close relationship with them. My transition to living in Canberra was made easier and was greatly enriched thanks to their kindness and generosity.

In 2006, after ANU College, I began studying a Bachelor of Information Technology at ANU. During my time at ANU, I developed a curiosity and eagerness to gain more knowledge from different parts of the world. ANU helped me to achieve this by electing me as an ANU ambassador on an exchange program to Stony Brook University in New York. There, I was able to visit the headquarters of Morgan Stanley and Bloomberg – an opportunity that inspired me to aim for a role in a global organisation after graduation. It also allowed me to gain invaluable insights into the competitive business and financial world and meet many business contacts from Wall Street.

While I was a student, I established my own web consulting business, iBooster Pty Ltd, which provided tailored web solutions to clients such as the Davis Projects for Peace and the Division of Information within the ANU. My experience at ANU certainly opened a lot of opportunities for me in my career.

Since graduating, I have worked at Macquarie Bank and ActewAGL in Australia and am now pursuing my own entrepreneurial venture in London. While in London, I have worked for Phoenix Business Solutions and co-founded Poq Studio as a technology specialist. Poq Studio makes it possible for small and medium-sized fashion retailers to on-sell mobile devices using their own branded applications and mobile websites. We were fortunate enough to win the Bright Ideas Award from The University College London for this venture. Poq Studio is strongly backed by one of the most renowned venture capitalists in the e-commerce industry and we have most recently been accepted into the prestigious Seedcamp, Europe's leading micro-seed investment fund and mentoring program. I am looking forward to revolutionising the online fashion industry!

My learnings at the ANU have stayed with me throughout my career. During my studies, we were encouraged to work as a team. The ability to be able to cooperate with colleagues from different backgrounds was the most valuable lesson I received from the ANU and has benefited me a great deal in my career since graduating.

Looking back at my time at the ANU, I think I would tell students to make the most of their time by becoming involved in student societies and clubs and to make the most of the sunshine in Union Court during lunchtime - you don’t get a lot of sunshine in London! Some of the most memorable experiences I have came from playing college basketball, participating in a Chinese drama and Japanese Kabuki performance, attending BBQs run by the Japan Club in the Bamboo garden, being involved in the ANU Kendo Club, and living in Burton & Garran Hall, where I made many life-long friends from all over the world. My experience at the ANU was amazing and I am very passionate about being involved in building an alumni network in London.

Staying connected to the ANU is really important to me, not only because it’s the place that supported and gave me opportunities to realise my potential, but because of the value of having a wide network of fellow alumni living all over the world. It means a lot to be a graduate of a top university like the ANU. It allows you to take the knowledge you have learnt and the confidence you have achieved with you to the global stage and achieve your dreams.
